Footnote
An editor once told me that there was a “formula” for commercially successful romance books. In general, it begins with girl meets boy, they fall in love, there is a crisis that tests that love, and eventually end up together. My initial thought was… no problem there.
But then she kept going. In addition, there were other “rules”. Among, them was that every story had to be told from a singular POV (point of view), the female’s. Also, while she was allowed to have sex and with more than one lover in the story, the last one had to be the final one. Never should she go back and forth. Plus, one-night stands should generally be a mistake and regretted. My next thought was… I guess they call it romantic fiction for a reason.
Finally, she cautioned about staying away from certain subject matters that might be considered uncomfortable for readers such as religion, politics, death (suicide), abuse etc. My thought was… Really? How boring is that!
Armed with all her advice, I went back to the drawing board and put together a book that checked every box. And? She rejected it. What surprised me the most, however, was that I was kind of glad. The formula is counterproductive to my imagination. I like telling stories from many points of view with many twists and turns. I didn’t really want to give that up. So, my final thought was … Self published author.
Out of respect for my readers, though, I have devised this spoiler page. I will write a few lines about the book in general and then each book has three items. First, the naughty factor. On the scale of Jane Austen to erotica, mine are rated R on average. But there are a few exceptions, which I will note. Second is POV. Even authors get bored doing the same thing over and over. I like to tell stories from different peoples point of view. If that’s not how you prefer to read, then here’s your chance to move on to the next one. The third and final spoiler is regarding content that some readers may find objectionable.
